Agostina Pieri was founded in the late 1980’s by family patriarch Pieri Alessandro. At the time, the modest amount of grapes grown on his small 11 hectare estate were sold to other wineries. In 1994, when control of the estate passed to Pieri’s two daughters, the decision was made to bottle their own wine. We are all the more fortunate for it.
Today the family farms seven small vineyards and produces mostly Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino, though they also produce two younger DOC Sant’Antimo reds.
Pieri’s Brunello is one of the most elegant and feminine Brunello I’ve ever tasted. I last reported on this wine back in 2012 and not much has changed since then. This is a floral, lively, nimble wine. Aged for a total of 2 years in a combination of French barrique and Slavonian cask, the wine strikes a balance that almost seems unique to Montalcino.

The 2006 Brunello is a gorgeous sparkling violet color. The aromas of the wine are delicate, feminine, graceful and still searing. There’s tropical floral aromas – like gardenia and lavendar. There’s a wild berry note that seems punctuated by powdery pepper and a freshly turned dirt/mineral undertone. It’s beautiful. On the palate, the wine displays a nimbleness – I am careful to avoid using the word light, because this is full bodied. Yet this dances freely on your palate. The elegant display of berry fruit is accented well by sweet spices, pipe tobacco and leather. There is lots more to give here and lots of life ahead. This is well balanced and enjoyable now, but I’ve no doubt it will last and drink well for 5 or 10 years more. A relative bargain at around $34-$40. 93 points.
