~ The Entrance to the Ancient Strozzi Cantina ~ |
Tenute Guicciardini Strozzi is nestled against the rolling hills of San Gimignano. Owned by the Strozzi family, the estate is now run by Principe and his daughters. Interestingly, research the family has unearthed provide all the veracity required to document the origins of the estate back to the year 994. In fact, the family are descendents of Lisa Gherardini del Giocondo, otherwise known as the “Mona Lisa”.
While Strozzi may be known mostly for their excellent array of Vernaccia, their red wines are improving greatly and are now under the direction of Franco Bernabei.
Today’s article is on the estates 2010 Campo Al Capriolo – a Tuscan blend, vinified in San Gimignano but sourced from the Strozzi vineyards in Maremma. A blend of 40% Cabernet, 40% Merlot and 20% Syrah, the wine sings of International style – but with an Italian accent.
In the glass, the wine is a deep purple with violet highlights. The aromas are redolent of toast, mineral, cedar and tobacco. On the palate, the wine has a nice core of ripe fruit, lots of acids and a medium bodied streak of tannin. Crushed plum, tobacco and earth are noted in good proportion but on a fairly simple canvas. All in all, a nice wine that’s a good value, but nothing terribly exciting. 87 points, about $19.
