Poliziano

~ The cantina of Poliziano features intricate stonework and houses a variety of barrels for aging ~

Poliziano holds a special place in my memory.  It possesses what my wife likes to call “a benchmark”.  Meaning what you ask?  Benchmarks are something important to you, that allows you to recall some other factoid or snippet of information.  In this case, my birth year 1968.  The very year Poliziano released its first wine.

I’m reminded of something that the present owner, Federico Carletti told me about Poliziano’s style. “Our wines evoke the historic tradition of the land, but at the same time speak eloquently to the modern world.”  This provides the reader with many clues of the family philosophy and winemaking style.

Poliziano Barrel

~ A peek inside an aging barrel at Polizano ~

Poliziano crafts its estate Vino Nobile from 42 hectares of vineyards that sit approximately 450 meters above sea level.  The philosophy stated above is present in the style of this wine. Although Vino Nobile may be 100% Sangiovese by law, this wine is always a blend.  A blend of grapes and a blend of barrels.

The 2015 and 2016 version of this wine were excellent and part of my Vino Nobile coverage.  The wine discussed today stands as their equal and has a very bright future.

Poliziano

~ Benchmark…… 1968 ~

The 2019 Poliziano Estate Vino Nobile is approximately 85-90% Sangiovese with the balance devoted to Canaiolo, Colorino and Merlot.  As I alluded to above, the wine is aged in 2/3 barrique and 1/3 large botte. The balance and the style are impeccable.

In the glass the wine is a deep ruby color throughout with sunburst highlights at the rim of the bowl.  In word, the wine is gorgeous.  Bright aromas of red cherry, raspberry, sweet tobacco leaf and sandalwood are present, fresh and attractive.  On the palate, the wine is medium to medium plus bodied.  Brilliantly fresh flavors of juicy red cherry, raspberry, toasted spices and fresh fennel are long and lovely.  The tannins are intricately integrated and woven like silk.   With about an hour of aeration, the wine plumps up further and gains viscosity.  Drinks so well now but will last 5-8 years in your cellar.  93 points.  Find this wine & Support Tuscan Vines.

For my Rustic Tuscany Tour travelers, we are spending ample time in Montepulciano next month.  We will experience all that this commune has to offer.

Although we are visiting Contucci and Avignonesi but not Poliziano, you can visit the excellent shop in town that Poliziano owns.   Salute!
