I’ve written often on these pages that I consider 2007 to be the “inferior” vintage to 2006. Granted, they are different and while they are both excellent, I still believe that the 2006’s are the finer wines. This tasting didn’t change that perception, but it did come very close.
Decanted for only 15 minutes, the 2007 Castello Banfi Brunello di Montalcino is a medium violet red in the glass. It’s bright, lusterous, with a slight copper tone out at the rim. At first sniff, there was nary any aroma to note whatsoever, but 30 minutes later, the wine began to blossom. Aromas of spice, flowers, and red fruits are noticeable. There’s even a slight hint of sage. In the mouth, the wine is elegant, polished, and displays almost a regal standing. Don’t let the pomp fool you; this is a full bodied wine. It’s dark wild berry fruit is accented nicely by sweet pipe tobacco, floral perfume and earth notes. The architecture of the fruit picked up even more weight as dinner progressed and there are plenty of ripe medium bodied, silky tannins on the finish. This is so delicious now. And that’s where I draw the distinction between 2007 and 2006. The former will charm early and will hold well in the cellar for at least 5 years. And isn’t that really what one could hope for? The latter vintage also shined early, and then began to close down. They’ll cellar for up to 15 years easily and emerge in glorius form, with ripe bottle sweet fruit and lots of complexities to cherish. In the meantime, drink the charming 07’s now and the Castello Banfi fits that bill nicely. 93 points, about $48.

I can't wait for the Italian wine sale!
One store has finally got the 2007 Mate in, but I'm trying to be money wise and wait.
How much is the Mate?
John, the price is $58.99, but if I wait, should be around $50.
I loved the 2006 (I'm afraid I went gaga over it)which I paid $54.
Interesting. Yes, the 2007's I've seen are lower in price than the 2006's by a few dollars. I think if you wait, you'll be rewarded. I don't see too much push for $60 2007s simply because there are better (and cheaper) 2006's to be had. I don't see the Mate around here, but I have seen it reviewed in places besides yours. You were the first though!
Wow John, your review describes exactly what I noticed when I tried this wine last night. Same experience completely. The first aromas were non-descript and alcoholic but they opened up once the wine had a chance to breathe. I also noticed the initial metalic flavor but after letting it decant for awhile, dark fruit emerged. Overall, quite good but I bet it would be amazing after a few years in the cellar.
Jon,
Thanks for visiting and commenting. I guess we shouldn't be surprised that Brunello this young can need some aeration. It's hard to lay off sometimes though! As I said the other night, we are fortunate to have so many good vintages at our finger tips now.
Salute! We'll talk soon.

Hi John… I finally got the review posted. It was nice reliving the memory of the tasting. It was great, but if I pick up another 2007, it's going into the cellar for awhile.
