Sat down for a quiet, dinner of olives, sauteed broccoli rabe, and baked chicken with bread crumbs and turned on the Olympics for a casual glance. Opened the 2009 Truchard Syrah to accompany and as usual, could not be more pleased with this Syrah from Carneros.
A while back I reviewed the 2007 Vintage of this wine and from vintage to vintage, my notes are very consistent. This cool climate Syrah is dark, blackish purple in the glass. The nose consists of black fruits, with slight licorice, piney underbrush, and a bit of funky barnyard which adds but does not detract. It’s a tightrope to walk to be sure, but this was well done. In the mouth the wine is elegant, medium to full bodied with good concentration to the black fruits, minerals and piney essence. Overall, a great effort and a great value. Consistent winner and really paired well with the olives. 91 points, about $18.
