The final holiday of the summer turned out to be pretty low key this year. In honor of National Cabernet Day, I held off opening my contribution until the weekend.
We started off with assorted appetizers including oysters on the half shell and opened a wine I had been searching for for quite some time. It had seemingly disappeared from the marketplace, so when I found it, I grabbed several bottles.
The 2011 Dry Creek Vineyard Chenin Blanc is absolutely delicious. You may recall, from my earlier interview with winemaker Tim Bell, that 2011 was the first vintage he was responsible for from grape to bottle, as he put it. He’s off to a great start!
In the glass, the wine is a pretty, clear golden color. Aromas include tropical fruits, pineapple, minerals, wet shells, and crisp key limes. In the mouth, the wine is crisp, refreshing and while medium bodied, also elegant. Slightly spicy, with exotic, tropical fruit flavors and a strong current of that underlying minerality. An absolutely magical match with the raw oysters. 92 points, about $16.

As for the contribution to Cabernet Day, with various assorted cuts of grilled meat we opened the 2007 Ghost Block Cabernet Sauvignon. I’ve previously reported on the 2005 Ghost Block, and this version exceeded that. Hailing from the Oakville section of the Napa Valley, this wine exudes purity like few recent Cabernets I can recall. It’s blackish purple in the glass, and gushes with aromas of black fruits, new leather, cedar and cassis. In the mouth, the wine is full bodied with loads of juicy black fruits, spices, cedar, licorice and toast. It’s massive, but oh, so delicious. All is in balance, with plenty of acidity and still some chewy tannins. I’d make a note to try in another years time. Will cellar effortlessly for at least 5 more years. 95 points, about $50.
