Typically Syrah comes in two general styles. There’s the riper, more viscous and decadent California and Australian style, and there’s the more reserved, cooler climate, European style, which can lead to more secondary aromas and flavors that one would more associate with a barnyard than a piece of fruit! This one, marries both of these attributes with amazing success.
The 2009 Novy Santa Lucia Highlands Syrah is made by Adam Lee, owner and winemaker of Siduri wines. Novy is a family owned winery also owned by the Lee’s. The 2009 Novy Syrah is deep dark purple in the glass, and at first whiff, displays some secondary aromas of barnyard, tobacco, and dried meats and herbs. However, on the palate, the wine is very ripe and juicy with lots of fresh black fruits, hints of spice and moderate tannins that provide structure to the wine. It’s beautiful and it’s in a screwcap so there’s no fear of cork taint ruining the wine. At about $20, it’s a steal and will accompany a vast variety of foods. 93 points.
