Spain has long been a favorite of mine for producing excellent wines in the under $15 price point. Bodegas Atteca has met this challenge many times, and this latest example is no exception.
The recently released 2007 Atteca Armas is 100% old vine Garnacha (Grenache) from vines aged 60+ years. It’s a pretty violet purple in the glass, with darker, almost streaky reflections. The aromas are charming and playful with spice, floral and subtle earth notes framing the smokey, plummy fruit tones. In the mouth, the wine is vibrant, primary and juicy with dark plum fruit, a peppery spice, and a slight vanilla undertone.
Easily recommended for a nice change of pace, and affordable enough to stock as a house wine that is far enough away from the mainstream Merlots of the world. Solid value. 88 points, about $16.
