~ Cellars of Tua Rita in Suvereto Maremma ~ |
By Tuscan standards and life lines, Tua Rita is a relative infant. Purchased in 1984 by Rita & Virgilio Tua as a place to spend their retirement, the two quickly realized that their passion was calling them to exploit the great potential that their small farm was hiding.
The winery is located in the town of Notri, near Suvereto and lies only 100 meters above sea level. The influences of the minerality from this environment is notable in their wines. Over the years, Tua Rita has met with increased success on the heels of 100 point scores for their pure Merlot, Redigaffi. And prices have risen as one might expect. But there are values to be had here as well, and the subject of today’s article is one of them.

~ Lovely Vines on the Tua Rita Estate ~ |
The 2010 Rosso di Notri, literally – red of Notri is predominantly Sangiovese with unspecified percentages of Cabernet and Merlot. It is, in the truest sense, a “second” wine, as it’s comprised of fruit not destined for Redigaffi or the estate’s Cabernet/Merlot blend, Guisto di Notri.
In the glass the wine is vibrant violet color with pretty reflections. The aromas are pure and focused. There’s plenty of floral aromatics here from the Sangiovese along with added notes of fresh sage and crushed berries. It’s attractive. On the palate, the wine is juicy and expressive with a medium bodied core of red berries, dusty tannins and that trademark minerality. The Sangiovese for Rosso di Notri is fermented in stainless steel and sees no barrel aging. The complimentary grapes are aged in second passage barrique for 3 months. Once blended, it is refined in bottle up to one year. The 2010 is very pretty, and accessible right now. 88 points, about $19.
