~ Cantina a Tua Rita ~
By Tuscan standards, Tua Rita is a relative infant. Purchased in 1984 by Rita & Virgilio Tua as a place to spend their retirement, the two quickly realized that their passion was calling them to exploit the great potential that their small farm was hiding.  For years, the pair farmed their land and sold the grapes to notable Maremma wineries like Sassicaia; but beginning in 1992 they decided to make their dream a reality and began bottling their own wine.

On the heels of very high scores from notable critics, the winery emerged as a major player in the region seemingly overnight.  Mention their pure Merlot, Redigaffi, and you’ll surely get some appreciative nods.  But one of the estates best and most affordable wines, is it’s pure Sangiovese, Perlato del Bosco.

Today we’re focusing on one of the estate’s newest releases, the 2011.
Sangiovese is not an approved grape in the DOC of Bolgheri/Maremma so any wine based in that varietal must be labeled “Toscana Rosso” – humble red Tuscan wine. Indeed, this wine may be humble, and although it speaks with a slight maritime influenced accent,  it is a wonderful Sangiovese that can easily sit among its more notable central Tuscan brethren.
The 2011 Perlato del Bosco, boasts a deep violet color, with only a slight lightening toward the rim of the bowl.  The wine was not decanted.  Aromas leap from the glass.  Forward notes of crushed fruit, new shoe leather, spice and fresh leaf tobacco are prominent.
On the palate, the wine is juicy, lively, and vibrant with fresh acidity and a large core of ripe berry fruit.  Providing complexity is a noticeable streak of minerality that runs under the fruit.  Tua Rita’s vineyards are only 100 meters above sea level and the land is dotted with sea shells.  On the finish, this delicious wine is long and ripe with added notes of spice and coffee. A tremendous value that drinks well now and should continue to do so over the next 5-7 years.  Stock up!  92 points, about $27.
