Fontodi is a master of Sangiovese. The certified organic estate located in Panzano in Chianti has been crafting amazing wines under the direction of Giovanni Manneti for decades.
I’ve been to the Fontodi winery a few times and have always been pleasantly welcomed by Mr. Manneti. Though recently, in his role as the President of the Chianti Classico Consorzio, he’s often traveling.
However, one time that I caught up to him at the estate, he was showing us around and said, “You’re in for a treat today. We are bottling Chianti Classico right now and we only bottle one day per month – in alignment with the phases of the moon.”

It was just over a year ago that I spotlighted the 2019 Classico from Fontodi. As the calendar moves forward another year, so too does the vintage.
The 2020 Fontodi Chianti Classico is brilliant ruby with plenty of violet highlights. Primary aromas of fresh cherry, flowers and herbs mark this young Sangiovese. On the palate, the wine is juicy and lively with fresh berry notes accented by hints of vanilla toast. Fairly straight forward, especially at this early stage. Yet, I can’t help but be let down a little. I loved the 2009, 2010, 2015 and 2019. This one is not at that level. Dare I say stick to the best years here? Especially considering the relative value – or lack thereof at the current release price. 88 points. About $44. Find this wine.
Salute!
