~ Castello di Bossi, asleep for winter ~
Castello di Bossi is located in the southern half of the Chianti Classico production zone, in the Commune of Castelnuovo Berardenga. The Family Castle itself is located at the center of the estate. The first tower, built in about 1099, shows the early strategic importance of the area as yet another guardian of Florence. In about 1450 the castle was expanded into the 4-walled fortress seen today.
The Castello di Bossi estate extends over 650 hectares, 124 of which are under vine. Cabernet, Merlot, Sangiovese and other indigenous varietals are grown.  Recently, the estate has been on the cutting edge of organic and minimalist practices, including the installation of a large solar farm on site that generates almost all of the estates electrical needs.

Bossi is fast becoming, if not one of my favorite producers in the area, than surely one of the most reliable. Whether its their Chianti Classico, their pure Merlot, or the subject of todays review, they simply have not let me down.  After watching the movie Somm, I was itching for a pure wine with specific terroir and this delivered on all facets.
The 2010 Castello di Bossi Chianti Classico Riserva “Berardo”  is a special wine indeed.  Sourced from the estate’s oldest vineyards, which are nearing 30 years of age, Berardo is 100% Sangiovese that spends 2 years in barrique and 1 year in bottle prior to release.

In the glass, the wine is a medium ruby with violet reflections that are typical and pretty to look at.  Aromas emerge in an elegant frame with licorice, fennel, wild cherry and tobacco leaf starring.

Juicy and refined on the palate, the power of the wine is deftly presented in an elegant manner.  Ripe, full bodied cherry notes are framed with chestnut, spice, tobacco and fennel. The medium tannins contribute wonderful structure along with the refreshing acidic “lift”.  There is nothing not to like here.  Drinks very well now, but will easily last in your cellar another 3-5 years.  If you try one, good luck keeping your hands off the rest.  94 points and a steal around $25.
