Le Pupille

~ The Le Pupille Cantina under lock and key ~

“This land is my choice of life, as making wine has always been my profession….”

Since she was only 20 years old, Elisabetta Geppetti, a fiery redhead with passion and youthful energy to match, knew that she wanted to make wine at her family estate. After a remakable 30 year career she has created one of the most significant wine estates in the Maremma and has been instrumental in bringing the recognition so deserved to this wine making region along the Tuscan coast.

In 1992 she became the President of the Morellino di Scansano Consortium; the first woman to serve as head of any Consortium in Italy. She has earned the title of how many refer to her: The Ambassador of Maremma.

Today I’m looking at one of the newest releases from the Estate; Poggio Valente.   I’ve written about this wonderful wine many times; most recently the 2016 two times over.  It never fails to impress, but in the instant case, I think this may be the best version of the wine I’ve tried.

The Poggio Valente vineyard was planted in 1970 and the 14 hectares of Sangiovese resident there produce grapes that give amazingly full bodied, luscious wines that can rival the best Sangiovese from anywhere in Italy.  It stands among the best from the Tuscan coast.

The 2019 Fattoria Le Pupille Poggio Valente is 100% Sangiovese.  In the glass, the wine is deep ruby with violet highlights. Aromas of black cherry with baking spices, tobacco leaf, and fresh flowers are persistent and wonderful.   On the palate, there are bright and deep flavors of cherry, tobacco, leather and cocoa. I love this but why am I not surprised?  The consistency is impressive.  Juicy, sapid and long on the finish that stays fresh and lively.  95 points, just a must have in 2019.  Brilliant Sangiovese.   Find this wine.

Finally,  we will be visiting Fattoria Le Pupille during my October Rustic Tuscany Tour.  If you’re in attendance, you will get to taste this release and an aged example from their cellars.  Elisabetta Geppetti will hopefully be personally pouring!  Want to come?  There are 3 reservations remaining so contact me at:  Tuscanvines@yahoo.com for details and pricing.   Cheers!
